This past weekend, we began a new teaching series—Self Made. It is a badge of honor in American culture to be considered a self-made man or woman. With good reason. Yet, being the god of our own world has a dark side. When we are at the center, the pressure is on us to find happiness, meaning, and security. A message promising freedom turns us into slaves—anxious, tired, and disconnected.

Allendale and Hampton counties are located in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, and our partnership with local churches in the Lowcountry began over a decade ago. One way we come alongside these churches is through BridgeBuilders—a summer camp for local children and students focused on bridging gaps in our relationships with each other and with Christ.

May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and we want to take some time to celebrate all that God is doing through our Foster & Adopt ministry and pray for the families and individuals who are involved. This past weekend, we heard Spartanburg members Robert and Autumn Andrews share part of their story of fostering and adopting two children.

One organization we partner with to provide support for international refugees is World Relief—a global Christian humanitarian organization that brings sustainable solutions to disasters, extreme poverty, violence, oppression, and mass displacement.

One of our local Outreach partners is Griggs Church, located in the historical Poe Mill neighborhood of Greenville, which has seen economic downturn since the mill’s closing in the 1970s. Our work with Griggs includes providing manpower to run a three-week summer day camp for children in the Poe Mill area with Grace Church Student volunteers.

Celebrating baptism at Easter has long been a special time for our Grace family. As we rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus and the hope we have in him, we also celebrate those who identify with him in baptism. This year, over 65 individuals across all campuses owned their faith by obeying Jesus’ call to follow him in baptism.

This past weekend, we learned about a developing partnership with the Greenville County Detention Center. Over the past few years, we have been making connections and developing relationships with staff members at the GCDC, and we are excited to see more opportunities to serve and engage both staff and inmates come to fruition.
