Culturally Engaged

She Is Safe works to prevent, rescue, and restore girls from abuse and slavery in Myanmar. As one of our serving partners, this organization strives to be the hands and feet of Jesus to these young girls. Kristin Fisher, a member of our Taylors campus, oversees this ministry and recently shared an update with us about how She Is Safe has been impacting lives in the past year and how we can be praying for them.

What is life in Myanmar like for girls?

Myanmar is a beautiful country devastated by natural disasters and ongoing civil war, which has led to widespread displacement, instability, and extreme economic poverty across the country. These challenges result in many difficulties for girls, including oppression and a lack of access to education—making them routinely vulnerable to abuse and trafficking.

In our areas of work in Myanmar, many girls are forced to drop out of school to enter the work force before the age of 13. These little girls are regularly forced into harsh jobs and exploitative working conditions. Many will become child brides by the time they are 15 or 16.

How does She Is Safe help?

If a little girl can delay marriage until adulthood and is able to stay in school for a few more years, her entire life trajectory changes. Staying in school gives her the skills she needs for higher paying jobs with better conditions. Delaying marriage makes her less vulnerable to domestic violence and exploitation as she enters a marriage with life experience, skills, and education.

With that goal in mind, She Is Safe works to provide monthly support for teen girls in high-risk communities. She Is Safe Groups help vulnerable young girls build community, receive education support and health and hygiene training, learn about their inherent dignity, and gain valuable life skills.

Last month, the girls went through the She Is Safe Anti-Trafficking Curriculum, where they learned critical information about staying safe from exploitation and human trafficking. Hands-on learning through interactive games helped them to make wise decisions, problem solve, and stay safe in a routinely risky environment.

It was a meaningful experience that opened my eyes to important topics like anti-trafficking. Before this, I was unaware of the danger. Now I feel more informed and prepared to protect myself and raise awareness in my community. The knowledge I have gained here is something I will carry with me for life. –Mya, age 16

Mothers have also been learning about keeping their children safe—becoming advocates for delaying their daughter’s marriages and helping them stay in school. This is a profound shift that is changing the future for girls like Mya.

What’s happened over the last year?

  • 48 women and teens have been equipped to become leaders.
  • 19 different She Is Safe Groups have served 243 women and teens.
  • 445 teen girls have been made safer from trafficking and abuse through vocational training, mentoring, and leadership training.

We are overjoyed to partner with She Is Safe in the work that they are doing to help prevent abuse and human trafficking before it happens. Please join us in praying for these precious girls—that they would grow in confidence, walk in life-changing safety and freedom, and have a future transformed by the love of Christ pouring out through this work.
