In this passage, we see two of his disciples grapple with unmet expectations, be confronted with the truth of Jesus’ resurrection, and slowly begin to understand that God is doing something much bigger than they ever could have imagined.

Jesus’ followers are devastated that he did not meet their expectations. Have you experienced a time when you had certain expectations of God for your life and they did not work out? What was that like? How did it affect your faith?
Even though the disciples are confused and slow to understand, Jesus graciously reveals himself to them. How does this give us hope that we can see more of God?
Consider the good news of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. What does it mean to you personally? Is anything holding you back from believing in Jesus and moving towards him in faith?
Key Points
As Jesus’ followers discuss the events of the past three days, they are clearly devastated that Jesus did not deliver Israel from Rome.
However, God’s plans for redemption are much bigger than they anticipate. God is clear that they need deliverance from sin more than anything else.
We also often have specific expectations of God for our lives, but God is not working to make our dreams come true.
Our biggest problem is separation from God because of sin. The gospel—Jesus’ perfect life, sacrificial death, and resurrection—is the only way we can be reconciled to God.
We have access to this salvation through faith alone—not through any type of work or performance.
Just as Jesus graciously reveals himself to his disciples, so God in his kindness will make himself available to those who seek him.
